Tarek Sahmoud is a Novartis co-author of three Atlas trials of everolimus, a rapamycin-like drug that blocks mTORC1, the growth-control complex. BOLERO-2 (BAS2012) added everolimus to the hormone drug exemestane in women with advanced hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer whose disease had grown on earlier hormone treatment. EXIST-1 (FRA2013) and EXIST-2 (BIS2013) tested everolimus in tuberous sclerosis complex, a genetic disease in which mTORC1 runs unchecked and benign tumours grow in the brain and kidneys. These are randomised trials in patients, and they supported approval of everolimus for these uses.
Sahmoud qualified in medicine at Cairo University in Egypt and earned a PhD in public health, epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of Bordeaux II in France. He coordinated clinical trials for several disease groups at the EORTC, the European cancer trials organisation, and worked in drug development at AstraZeneca, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Boehringer Ingelheim. At Novartis he was Vice President and Senior Global Clinical Program Head in oncology drug development, the role he held when these trials were reported.
He then became Corporate Vice President and Global Head of Clinical Development in solid tumours and immuno-oncology at Celgene, Chief Medical Officer of H3 Biomedicine in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 2016, and Chief Medical Officer of Humanigen in 2018. A current position could not be confirmed.
