Martine Piccart is a Belgian breast cancer specialist. She is Professor of Oncology at the Université libre de Bruxelles and works at the Jules Bordet Institute in Brussels. She co-founded the Breast International Group, a network of academic research groups that runs breast cancer trials worldwide, and has been president of ESMO and ECCO.
BAS2012 is BOLERO-2, a phase 3 trial in 724 postmenopausal women with hormone-receptor-positive advanced breast cancer whose disease had returned on aromatase inhibitors. Adding the mTOR inhibitor everolimus to exemestane raised median progression-free survival from 2.8 to 6.9 months by local assessment (10.6 vs 4.1 months by central review). Piccart is one of the authors of the paper, which was led by José Baselga and Gabriel Hortobagyi.
The trial showed that resistance to hormone therapy in breast cancer can be tackled by blocking mTOR, and it led to everolimus being used in this setting.

| Year | Evidence | Study |
|---|---|---|
| 2012 | H | Everolimus in postmenopausal hormone-receptor-positive advanced breast cancer (BOLERO-2) BAS2012 Author of the BOLERO-2 phase 3 trial, in which adding everolimus to exemestane more than doubled progression-free survival in hormone-receptor-positive advanced breast cancer. |
| 2014 | H | Everolimus plus exemestane for hormone-receptor-positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor-2-negative advanced breast cancer: overall survival results from BOLERO-2† PIC2014 First author of the final BOLERO-2 overall-survival report: everolimus plus exemestane kept its progression-free survival gain but did not significantly lengthen overall survival (31.0 vs 26.6 months). |
