TORC1 and PKA activity towards ribosome biogenesis oscillates in synchrony with the budding yeast cell cycle

Guerra P, Milias-Argeitis A et al. · 2022 · Journal of Cell Science · Atlas ID GUE2022

What this study shows

Tracking the localisation of two TORC1 and PKA targets by time-lapse microscopy in hundreds of yeast cells shows that TORC1/PKA activity towards ribosome biogenesis rises and falls in step with the cell cycle even when outside conditions stay constant; mutations in upstream regulators suggest internal metabolic signals partly drive the oscillation.

Abstract

ShowHide

Recent studies have revealed that the growth rate of budding yeast and mammalian cells varies during the cell cycle. By linking a multitude of signals to cell growth, the highly conserved target of rapamycin complex 1 (TORC1) and protein kinase A (PKA) pathways are prime candidates for mediating the dynamic coupling between growth and division. However, measurements of TORC1 and PKA activity during the cell cycle are still lacking.

Evidence type M Molecular — cells, biochemistry, structure Marked M because it is molecular or in-vitro work (model: Budding yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), time-lapse single-cell microscopy) rather than a whole-organism health-outcome study. That is often exactly where causal biology gets established -- the code says which system the finding was shown in, and nothing about how good the work is.
