Daryl P. Shanley
Systems biologist of ageing whose Newcastle modelling group built, with the Thedieck lab, the dynamic models of mTOR signalling in the Atlas.
Reader in Systems Biology of Ageing, Newcastle University, and Director of CISBAN (per Newcastle staff profile) · Research Associate, Newcastle and Manchester · PhD in Computational Biology, University of Manchester (Wellcome Trust Mathematical Biology studentship)

Shanley is joint senior author, with Kathrin Thedieck, on the 2012 dynamic model of the insulin–mTOR network (DAL2012) and the 2016 systems study showing that amino acids switch on AMPK and mTOR together (DAL2016). His group supplied the modelling side; Piero Dalle Pezze, first author on both papers, worked in his Newcastle unit.
He did a PhD in computational biology at the University of Manchester. Before academia he worked as a scientist at British Gas and the Institut Français du Pétrole. At Newcastle he models ageing processes, from senescent cells to theories of why ageing evolves.
Milestones in the Atlas
A selection, not a full bibliography: only papers that meet the Atlas inclusion criteria.
| Year | Evidence | Study |
|---|---|---|
| 2012 | M | A dynamic network model of mTOR signaling reveals TSC-independent mTORC2 regulation DAL2012 Joint senior author (modelling): dynamic insulin–mTOR model; mTORC2 activation is TSC-independent. |
| 2016 | M | A systems study reveals concurrent activation of AMPK and mTOR by amino acids DAL2016 Joint senior author (modelling): amino acids activate AMPK and mTOR concurrently. |
