Ruijia Zhou

Researcher in the orthopedics department of Tongji Hospital, Wuhan, and first author of a 2026 study on corilagin, a plant polyphenol that protected mouse cartilage by restoring autophagy

Department of Orthopedics, Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (at the time of the study, 2026)

Ruijia Zhou's 2026 study, with Hongbo You as senior author, looked for a way to protect cartilage in osteoarthritis. Cartilage cells, called chondrocytes, need autophagy to clear damaged parts, and too much PI3K/AKT/mTOR signalling holds autophagy back. Inflammation driven by NF-kappaB adds to the damage.

Corilagin, a polyphenol from several medicinal plants, damped both PI3K/AKT/mTOR and NF-kappaB in chondrocytes. Autophagy recovered and the cells produced more extracellular matrix, the tough material of cartilage. In mice whose knee joints were destabilised surgically (the DMM model), corilagin reduced cartilage erosion and joint damage scores. The results come from cells and mice only.

YearEvidenceStudy
2026 A Corilagin attenuates osteoarthritis progression by coordinating NF-κB inhibition with PI3K/AKT/mTOR-associated autophagy restoration. ZHOU2026B First author: showed that corilagin restores chondrocyte autophagy and matrix synthesis via PI3K/AKT/mTOR and NF-kappaB inhibition and reduces cartilage erosion in mice.
