Hongbo You

Orthopedic researcher at Tongji Hospital, Wuhan, and senior author of a 2026 mouse study showing that the plant compound corilagin slows osteoarthritis by restoring cartilage-cell autophagy

Department of Orthopedics, Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (at the time of the study, 2026)

In osteoarthritis the cartilage that cushions joints slowly breaks down. Chondrocytes, the cells that maintain cartilage, depend on autophagy, their internal recycling system, and autophagy falls when PI3K/AKT/mTOR signalling is too high. The 2026 study led by Ruijia Zhou, with Hongbo You as senior author, tested corilagin, a polyphenol found in several medicinal plants.

Corilagin lowered PI3K/AKT/mTOR and NF-kappaB signalling, the second being a main switch for inflammation. Chondrocytes recovered their autophagic flux and made more extracellular matrix, the material that gives cartilage its strength. In mice with surgically induced osteoarthritis (the DMM model, in which a knee ligament is cut to destabilise the joint), corilagin reduced cartilage erosion and lowered OARSI damage scores. These are cell and mouse results; corilagin has not been tested in people with osteoarthritis.

PubMed lists Hongbo You at the Department of Orthopedics of Tongji Hospital in Wuhan, where You has co-authored papers with Fengjing Guo, senior author of the Atlas review on mTORC2 in inflammation. Career details could not be confirmed from an official page.
