Robert J. Motzer Portrait: Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center

Robert Motzer is a medical oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York who heads its kidney cancer section. According to the MSK profile he has led more than 80 clinical trials, mostly in kidney and testicular cancer, and he chairs the NCCN guidelines panel for kidney cancer.

MOT2008 is the RECORD-1 trial, with Motzer as first author in The Lancet. Patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma whose disease had progressed on sunitinib, sorafenib or both received either everolimus (272 patients) or placebo (138). Median progression-free survival was 4.0 months with everolimus and 1.9 months with placebo, and the trial was stopped early. Common side effects were mouth sores, rash and fatigue, and 8% of treated patients developed pneumonitis.

This was one of the first large randomised trials to show that blocking mTOR helps cancer patients, and it supported the use of everolimus after other targeted drugs fail.
