Gary Hudes
Medical oncologist at Fox Chase Cancer Center who led the phase 3 trial showing that the mTOR inhibitor temsirolimus lengthens survival in poor-prognosis advanced kidney cancer
Department of Medical Oncology, Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia (at the time of the study, 2007)
In HUD2007, Gary Hudes was first author of the large randomised trial of temsirolimus, one of the first mTOR inhibitors tested in cancer. Patients with advanced kidney cancer and a poor outlook were given temsirolimus, interferon alfa (the standard treatment of the time), or both. Temsirolimus alone extended median overall survival to 10.9 months, compared with 7.3 months on interferon alfa. Rash, high blood sugar and high blood fats were more common with temsirolimus, which fits with mTOR's role in controlling metabolism. The trial is one of the strongest human data sets in this Atlas because it is a randomised phase 3 study.
At the time of the trial Hudes worked in the Department of Medical Oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. The PubMed record under 'Hudes G' and 'Hudes GR' runs to more than 170 papers, but the name matches other authors as well, so the later career is not described here.
