Hongxuan Feng

Neurologist at Suzhou Municipal Hospital and senior author of a 2026 stroke study proposing PIP4K2A as a protector of brain tissue through AKT/mTOR signalling and autophagy

Department of Neurology, The Affiliated Suzhou Hospital of Nanjing Medical University (Suzhou Municipal Hospital), Gusu School, Nanjing Medical University (at the time of the study, 2026)

When a stroke blocks a brain artery, doctors try to restore blood flow as quickly as possible. The returning blood, however, causes a second wave of damage called ischemia/reperfusion injury. The 2026 study led by Bodun Ma, with Hongxuan Feng as senior author, looked at PIP4K2A, a lipid kinase, in laboratory models of this injury.

Raising PIP4K2A levels reduced the injury. The team linked the effect to two things: less of a TRIB3-p62 protein complex, which can clog autophagy, the cell's recycling system, and changed AKT/mTOR signalling, so that autophagy could run properly again. The study proposes PIP4K2A-AKT/mTOR as a protective axis, a result from experimental models that has not been tested in patients.
