Bodun Ma

Neurology researcher in Suzhou and first author of a 2026 study on how the enzyme PIP4K2A protects the brain after stroke by restoring autophagy through AKT/mTOR

Department of Neurology, The Affiliated Suzhou Hospital of Nanjing Medical University (Suzhou Municipal Hospital), Gusu School, Nanjing Medical University (at the time of the study, 2026)

Restoring blood flow after a stroke saves brain tissue, but the sudden return of oxygen also injures cells. Bodun Ma's 2026 study, with Hongxuan Feng as senior author, asked whether the lipid kinase PIP4K2A could limit this reperfusion damage.

In the team's experimental models, more PIP4K2A meant less injury. Two changes went with it: less of a TRIB3-p62 complex that can jam autophagy, the cell's recycling pathway, and altered AKT/mTOR signalling, which let autophagy flow again. mTOR normally holds autophagy back when growth signals are high, so tuning this pathway changes how well damaged neurons clear debris. These are laboratory findings, not results in stroke patients.

2026 A PIP4K2A Attenuates Cerebral Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury by Reducing the TRIB3-p62 Complex Burden and Modulating AKT/mTOR Signaling. MA2026 First author: showed that PIP4K2A overexpression reduces ischemia/reperfusion brain injury by lowering the TRIB3-p62 burden and modulating AKT/mTOR to restore autophagic flux.
