George Yancopoulos is a physician-scientist who joined Regeneron in 1989 as its founding scientist, working with co-founder Leonard Schleifer. He is now the company's president and chief scientific officer. He is listed as a principal inventor or developer on several approved drugs from Regeneron and was elected to the US National Academy of Sciences in 2004.

The study in the Atlas, published in Nature Cell Biology in 2001, came from Regeneron's muscle biology group led by Sue Bodine. It asked what makes skeletal muscle grow or shrink in living animals.

The team found that the Akt/mTOR pathway turns up during muscle growth and down during wasting. Rapamycin blocked growth, and switching on the pathway genetically was enough to cause growth and to oppose muscle loss from disuse.

YearEvidenceStudy
2001 A Akt/mTOR pathway is a crucial regulator of skeletal muscle hypertrophy and can prevent muscle atrophy in vivo BOD2001 Showed in rats that Akt/mTOR signalling is needed and sufficient for skeletal muscle hypertrophy and can oppose atrophy; Yancopoulos was last author, with Bodine as first author.
2001 M Mediation of IGF-1-induced skeletal myotube hypertrophy by PI(3)K/Akt/mTOR and PI(3)K/Akt/GSK3 pathways ROM2001 Shows IGF-1 drives muscle fiber hypertrophy through Akt, via both the mTOR and GSK3 branches, in cultured myotubes, establishing mTOR as a central node for muscle growth signaling.
