What this study shows

HPV16 oncogene expression in breast tumor tissue from 92 patients transcriptionally upregulates PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway components, suggesting a viral mechanism contributing to mTOR pathway activation in breast cancer.

Abstract

ShowHide

Breast cancer is the most prevalent malignant tumor among women. Human papillomavirus (HPV) has been detected in breast tumors since the 1990s, and beyond its oncogenic potential, therapy resistance driven by viral immune evasion in non-anogenital tumors highlights the need to investigate viral activity in breast tissues. Among high-risk HPV types, HPV16 is one of the most prevalent and exhibits the highest carcinogenic potential. This study aimed to evaluate the expression of HPV16 oncogenes and the modulation of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway associated with viral activity.

Evidence type M Molecular — cells, biochemistry, structure Marked M because it is molecular or in-vitro work (model: Human (clinical samples, FFPE tissue)) rather than a whole-organism health-outcome study. That is often exactly where causal biology gets established -- the code says which system the finding was shown in, and nothing about how good the work is.
