Beatriz Eda de Oliveira Isídio
Researcher in Antonio Carlos de Freitas's laboratory at the Federal University of Pernambuco who studies whether human papillomavirus (HPV) is active in breast tumours
Laboratory of Molecular Studies and Experimental Therapy, Department of Genetics, Federal University of Pernambuco (papers 2024–2026, at the time of the study)
HPV, the virus that causes most cervical cancers, carries three cancer-promoting genes called E5, E6 and E7. A question still under debate is whether the virus also plays a part in some breast cancers. In DEOLIVEIRA2026, Beatriz Eda de Oliveira Isídio and colleagues in Recife measured these viral genes and the RNA messages of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR growth pathway in breast tumour samples. Of 92 patients, 48 had usable RNA. Tumours expressing HPV16 genes had higher PI3K and lower mTOR transcript levels. The design only shows an association between two sets of RNA measurements in tissue, so it does not prove that the virus switches the mTOR pathway on or off.
The work continues a line from the same laboratory, led by Antonio Carlos de Freitas in the Department of Genetics at the Federal University of Pernambuco. In a 2024 study of 56 patients from northeastern Brazil, on which de Oliveira Isídio was a co-author, the group detected HPV in about a third of breast tumours, mostly HPV16, often with high viral load and active E5. No institutional profile was found, so the affiliation shown is the one on the Atlas paper.
