Xiaoting Liang

Toxicology and environmental health researcher who found that the long non-coding RNA LINP1 protects skin cells from radiation-induced senescence by binding mTOR

Department of Environmental Health, School of Public Health, Shanxi Medical University (2026) · Department of Toxicology, School of Public Health, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou (2025)

Xiaoting Liang is first author of the Atlas study LIANG2026, with Liang Zhou of Southern Medical University in Guangzhou as senior author. Radiotherapy often damages the skin, and part of that damage comes from senescence, the state in which cells stop dividing for good. The team found that LINP1, a long non-coding RNA (an RNA that regulates other molecules without making a protein), rises sharply in keratinocytes, the main cells of the outer skin, after radiation.

LINP1 binds the FAT domain of mTOR through a central stretch of the RNA. This weakens the contact between mTOR and the tumour suppressor p53, so less p53 is phosphorylated at serine 15, and the cells are less likely to become senescent. Removing LINP1 made radiation damage worse in cultured keratinocytes and in pieces of human skin kept alive in the lab. Here mTOR acts as a partner of p53 in the stress response, not as a nutrient sensor.

Before moving to Shanxi Medical University in Taiyuan, Liang was listed at the Department of Toxicology of Southern Medical University's School of Public Health, as a co-author with Zhou on a 2025 study of how another long non-coding RNA drives drug resistance in melanoma.
