Sebastiano Sciarretta
Cardiologist and heart researcher at Sapienza University of Rome who trained with Junichi Sadoshima on how mTOR and autophagy protect or harm the stressed heart
Department of Medical-Surgical Sciences and Biotechnologies, Sapienza University of Rome, Latina campus, and IRCCS Neuromed, Pozzilli (2026) · Cardiovascular Research Institute, Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, Junichi Sadoshima lab (2014)
In 2014 Sebastiano Sciarretta, with Massimo Volpe and Junichi Sadoshima, wrote a review in Circulation Research on what mTOR does in the healthy and the diseased heart. Heart muscle cells need mTORC1, the growth-control complex, to build protein, grow and keep working. But under some kinds of heart stress, too much mTORC1 can block autophagy, the cell's recycling system, and partial inhibition of mTORC1 protected the heart in animal studies. A review gathers earlier findings rather than reporting new experiments, and most of the evidence it covers comes from mice and rats.
PubMed lists Sciarretta at that time at the Cardiovascular Research Institute of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark, in Sadoshima's group, and at IRCCS Neuromed, a research hospital in Pozzilli, Italy. This shows a career split between the United States and Italy, with work centred on heart failure, autophagy and mTOR signalling.
Sciarretta now works at the Department of Medical-Surgical Sciences and Biotechnologies of Sapienza University of Rome, on its Latina campus, together with IRCCS Neuromed. Recent papers include population studies of cardiovascular risk, such as a 2026 study of the oxidative enzyme NOX2 in blood and future heart events in the Moli-sani cohort, as well as clinical case reports.
