Peng Jin

Pharmaceutical scientist in Lei Luo's group at Southwest University in Chongqing who studies the drug pump P-glycoprotein, and first author of the study showing that oxidative stress boosts P-glycoprotein production through mTOR

College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Southwest University, Chongqing (Lei Luo group, papers 2025–2026)

P-glycoprotein is a pump in the cell membrane that throws drugs back out of the cell. Cancer cells that make a lot of it can resist many drugs at once. In the Atlas study JIN2026, Jin and colleagues in Lei Luo's group showed in cells that oxidative stress (a build-up of reactive oxygen molecules) switches on a chain of signals, PI3K to AKT to mTORC1 to the RNA-unwinding protein eIF4A, that makes the cell translate more P-glycoprotein from its existing messenger RNA. Because this skips the slower step of making new RNA, it is a fast route to drug resistance.

For the Atlas, the study is an example of mTORC1 acting through eIF4A to pick which proteins get made. It was done in cultured cells; whether it happens in tumours in patients is not shown.

On PubMed, Jin works with Luo at the College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Southwest University, on how drugs are absorbed and pumped out of cells. Earlier papers in the group include a 2025 study showing that glucosamine directly switches on intestinal P-glycoprotein and reduces drug absorption, and a 2026 study on making the colorectal cancer drug trifluridine better absorbed when taken by mouth. Career stage could not be confirmed.
