Many discoveries about mTOR depend on identifying proteins and the phosphate tags on them, and that is the job of mass spectrometry. Paul Jenoe is a co-author of the 2017 Cancer Cell study in this Atlas (GUR2017) from Michael Hall's lab. In a mouse model where too much mTOR signalling causes fatty liver that turns into liver cancer, the team found that mTORC2, the second mTOR complex, drives the production of fatty acids and sphingolipids, a class of membrane fats. Blocking either kind of fat synthesis prevented tumours in the mice, and in human liver cancer samples high lipid synthesis went together with mTORC2 activity.

Jenö has worked on protein analysis at the Biozentrum since at least the 1990s. A 1995 paper with Jenö as first author, from the Department of Biochemistry, described a simple method to digest proteins inside polyacrylamide gels to obtain internal sequences, a step that became routine in protein identification. Later papers list Jenö at the Biozentrum's Proteomics Core Facility, usually together with Suzette Moes, on studies ranging from mTOR signalling to maternal blood markers of Down syndrome (2009) and prostate cancer (2022).

PubMed shows more than 100 papers under this name, many of them from Michael Hall's lab, including the 2013 phosphoproteomics study that linked mTORC1 to pyrimidine synthesis. A current position after 2022 could not be confirmed.

  • Markus H. Heim Basel hepatologist who studies how the liver responds to viral infection and how liver cancer develops, and a co-author of the study linking mTORC2 to fat synthesis in liver tumours
  • Michael N. Hall Discovered TOR in yeast in 1991 and established it as a central controller of cell growth that responds to nutrients. His lab later showed that TOR works in two distinct complexes, TORC1 and TORC2, only one of which is blocked by rapamycin
