Ning Jiao

Animal nutrition scientist at Shandong Agricultural University who studies how feed contaminants such as mould toxins and bisphenol A harm pigs, and how nutrients like glutamine protect the gut

College of Animal Science and Technology, Shandong Agricultural University (papers 2021–2026)

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an industrial chemical found in some plastics that can reach animal feed. In the Atlas study XIE2026, Jiao's group, with first author Jiayuan Xie, fed piglets BPA and found damage to the jejunum, the middle part of the small intestine. Adding the amino acid glutamine reduced the damage, kept the gut lining sealed and restored mitochondrial energy production, alongside changes in AMPK and mTOR signalling, the linked sensors of cell energy and nutrients. It is a pig study, and the mTOR change is an association rather than a proven cause.

PubMed lists Jiao as a corresponding author at Shandong Agricultural University on studies of pigs and pig cells since at least 2021. One line of work follows zearalenone, a mould toxin with oestrogen-like effects, from its impact on the ovaries of young female pigs (2021) to its toxicity in pig intestinal cells (2026). Another line asks whether glutamine protects piglets from BPA: a 2023 paper found that glutamine reduced BPA-driven gut inflammation and shifted the gut bacteria, and the Atlas study extends this to mitochondria and AMPK-mTOR.

Jiao works with Weiren Yang at the Key Laboratory of Efficient Utilization of Non-grain Feed Resources in the College of Animal Science and Technology. Academic rank could not be confirmed.

2026 A Glutamine alleviates bisphenol A-induced jejunal injury in piglets involving mitochondrial function restoration and AMPK-mTOR signaling regulation. XIE2026 Senior author: led the piglet study showing that glutamine eased bisphenol A damage to the small intestine, with changes in AMPK-mTOR signalling.
