Jiayuan Xie

Animal nutrition researcher in Ning Jiao's group at Shandong Agricultural University who studies how feed contaminants damage the pig gut, and first author of the piglet study on glutamine and bisphenol A

College of Animal Science and Technology, Shandong Agricultural University (Ning Jiao group, papers 2026)

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an industrial chemical found in some plastics that can reach animal feed. In the Atlas study XIE2026, Xie, Ning Jiao and colleagues fed piglets BPA and found damage to the jejunum, the middle part of the small intestine. Adding the amino acid glutamine to the feed reduced the damage, helped the gut lining stay sealed and restored how the cells' mitochondria produce energy. These changes came with shifts in AMPK and mTOR signalling, the two linked sensors of cell energy and nutrients.

The study shows an association between glutamine, gut repair and AMPK-mTOR signalling in pigs. It does not prove that the mTOR change causes the protection, and it was not done in people.

PubMed lists Xie only in 2026, both times in Jiao's group at the Key Laboratory of Efficient Utilization of Non-grain Feed Resources at Shandong Agricultural University in Tai'an. The second paper looked at how the mould toxin zearalenone and its hidden glucoside form harm pig intestinal cells. The career stage (student or staff) could not be confirmed.

2026 A Glutamine alleviates bisphenol A-induced jejunal injury in piglets involving mitochondrial function restoration and AMPK-mTOR signaling regulation. XIE2026 First author: showed in piglets that glutamine reduced bisphenol A damage to the small intestine, with restored mitochondrial energy production and changes in AMPK-mTOR signalling.
