Michael B. Atkins
Medical oncologist specialising in kidney cancer and melanoma; led the randomised phase II dose study of temsirolimus (CCI-779) in advanced kidney cancer that supported taking the 25 mg weekly dose forward.
Deputy Director, Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Scholl Professor and Vice Chair, Department of Medical Oncology, Georgetown University Medical Center (at Georgetown since 2014) · previously Professor of Medicine and Deputy Chief of Hematology/Oncology, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center / Harvard Medical School, and leader of the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center kidney cancer program · MD, Tufts University School of Medicine (1980)
Michael Atkins was first author of the 2004 Journal of Clinical Oncology trial (ATK2004). 111 patients with advanced kidney cancer that had progressed on earlier treatment were randomised to weekly intravenous temsirolimus at 25, 75 or 250 mg. The objective response rate was 7%, median time to progression 5.8 months and median survival 15.0 months; efficacy and toxicity did not differ clearly between doses, which supported the lowest dose. There was no placebo or comparator arm, so survival figures cannot be attributed to the drug.
Atkins trained at Tufts and spent much of his career at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, where he led the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center kidney cancer program and its kidney cancer SPORE. He moved to Georgetown in 2014 as deputy director of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, where he co-directs the melanoma programme and leads kidney cancer research.
