Maggie McNeill

Paediatric haematology researcher at SickKids in Toronto and first author of a 2026 cohort study of sirolimus for Evans syndrome and other autoimmune blood-count disorders in children

Division of Hematology-Oncology, Department of Pediatrics, The Hospital for Sick Children, and Department of Pediatrics, University of Toronto (at the time of the study)

In Evans syndrome the immune system attacks the body's own blood cells, usually red cells and platelets together, so children can become anaemic and bruise or bleed easily. Steroids often help only for a while. Sirolimus (rapamycin) blocks mTOR in overactive immune cells and has been tried as a gentler long-term option. Maggie McNeill is first author of a 2026 retrospective study from the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto that looked back at children treated with sirolimus for Evans syndrome and for autoimmune cytopenias, low blood counts, linked to other conditions (MCNEILL2026). The authors report that sirolimus was effective. A look-back study from one centre cannot show how much of the improvement was due to the drug, and the abstract was not yet indexed when this profile was written, so the exact numbers are still to be added.

PubMed lists McNeill in the Division of Hematology-Oncology at SickKids and the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Toronto, working with senior author Manuel Carcao. No other papers clearly by the same person were found, and no personal institutional page was found, so the position shown is the one on the paper.
