Laurent Guibaud

First author of a 2026 case series on giving sirolimus (rapamycin) to pregnant women to treat large lymphatic malformations in their unborn babies

Pediatric and Fetal Imaging, Hôpital Femme Mère Enfant, Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (Lyon-Bron) · INSERM U1151, Necker Enfants Malades Institute (Paris)

Lymphatic malformations are clusters of abnormal fluid-filled channels that can grow large before birth. When they press on a baby's airway, breathing at birth can be dangerous. Sirolimus (rapamycin) blocks mTOR, the cell growth switch, and is used after birth for such lesions. This paper asks whether the mother can take it during pregnancy. In six pregnancies, treatment started between 24 and over 30 weeks, maternal side effects were mild, and the drug crossed the placenta. Five of the six newborns showed partial or marked shrinkage of the lesion on imaging. It was a small observational series, so it cannot show that the drug caused the improvement.

Laurent Guibaud is first author. PubMed lists him in the pediatric and fetal imaging unit of the Hôpital Femme Mère Enfant in Lyon-Bron, which is a reference center for superficial vascular anomalies, and at the Necker Enfants Malades Institute in Paris. His identity was checked through a related 2026 paper in Prenatal Diagnosis on maternal sirolimus for a fetal vascular tumor, which lists Laurent Guibaud at the same Lyon center and shares several co-authors with this series, among them Guillaume Canaud, Alexandre Guilhem, Sara Cabet and Antoine Fraissenon. A 2026 imaging review of venous malformations also lists him in the same unit.
