Rapamycin Attenuates Age-Related Changes in Marmoset Submandibular Gland: A Non-Human Primate Model of Human Oral Aging.
What this study shows
In the aging marmoset submandibular gland the authors found fewer mucous and serous acinar units, expansion of ductal and collagen-rich stromal compartments, more extracellular matrix remodeling, dysregulated lipid metabolism, and more apoptotic and senescent cells. Chronic oral rapamycin was associated with partial preservation of acinar structure and with less fibrosis, lipid accumulation and fewer apoptotic and senescent cells, giving a tissue picture closer to that of younger animals. Boundary: histological and immunofluorescence associations in one tissue of a short-lived primate; the abstract gives no dose or group sizes, does not show that gland function improved, and reports no lifespan outcome.
At a glance
| Evidence type | A Animal model Marked A because it is an animal intervention or observation study measuring an organismal outcome (model: Common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus), chronic oral rapamycin, submandibular gland histology and immunofluorescence); the code names the system studied -- animal work can be rigorous and still not be human data. |
