Paediatric surgeon-researcher who led a multicentre study showing that head-and-neck kaposiform hemangioendothelioma responds especially well to the mTOR inhibitor sirolimus

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a rare, locally aggressive vascular tumor of infancy. Sirolimus, which blocks mTOR, is the standard drug for KHE, but doctors did not know whether tumor location changes how well it responds.
Xu led a five-center Chinese cohort of 71 children and found that head-and-neck KHE responded dramatically better to sirolimus alone than KHE elsewhere — anatomical location turned out to be the single strongest independent predictor of treatment response, which could let doctors tailor treatment by tumor site.
