Tatsuhiro Sato is first author of SAT2010, done as a postdoc in Fuyuhiko Tamanoi's lab at UCLA. The team tested point mutations from cancer genome databases and found two, S2215Y (from a large intestine adenocarcinoma) and R2505P (from a renal cell carcinoma), that kept mTOR signalling active under nutrient starvation. mTORC1 from starved cells carrying the mutants still phosphorylated 4E-BP1, and the cells resisted the shrinkage caused by amino-acid withdrawal. The mutants stayed sensitive to rapamycin. The work grew out of the lab's earlier search for activating TOR mutations in fission yeast, which Sato also co-authored.

Sato earned his PhD at Osaka University in 2006 and was a postdoctoral fellow at UCLA from 2006 to 2009. He was then an assistant professor at the Kitasato University School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and in 2016 moved to the Aichi Cancer Center Research Institute in Nagoya, where he is a senior researcher. His staff page there lists the mTOR pathway as a research theme and his work on mesothelioma.
