Fuyuhiko Tamanoi is the senior author of SAT2010, done in his lab at UCLA with Tatsuhiro Sato as first author. The study showed that two point mutations in mTOR found in cancer genome databases, S2215Y and R2505P, keep mTOR signalling on even when cells are starved of nutrients, while leaving the mutants sensitive to rapamycin. His lab had earlier found activating mutations in the fission yeast TOR kinase Tor2 and in its upstream regulator Rheb, and carried that approach over to mTOR.

Tamanoi trained in biochemistry at Tokyo University and earned his PhD at Nagoya University (1977), followed by postdoctoral work at Harvard Medical School. He was a staff investigator at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and a faculty member at the University of Chicago before joining UCLA in 1993. His lab identified protein farnesyltransferase and geranylgeranyltransferases and worked on their inhibitors, and later developed mesoporous silica nanoparticles for drug delivery. He now leads a group at the Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences at Kyoto University, working on nanoparticles and cancer therapy.
