Su Bo
Cardiothoracic surgery researcher in Xiangyang who tests natural compounds against lung cancer cells, including gambogic acid acting on the AKT and mTOR pathway
Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Xiangyang No.1 People's Hospital, affiliated with Hubei University of Medicine (papers 2021–2026)
Su Bo is first author of the Atlas study BO2026, which tested gambogic acid, a yellow compound from the resin of the gamboge tree, on lung cancer cells. The study had two parts. In the computer part, network pharmacology and molecular docking (a simulation of how well a molecule fits into a protein) suggested that gambogic acid binds most tightly to AKT and to S6K1, a kinase that mTORC1 switches on to drive growth. In the lab part, the compound killed A549 lung cancer cells and pushed them into apoptosis, a controlled form of cell death.
The study did not measure whether gambogic acid directly blocks the mTOR enzyme, and it had no animal or human data. Docking predicts possible binding but does not prove it, so the link to mTOR remains a hypothesis to test.
PubMed lists Bo at the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery of Xiangyang No.1 People's Hospital, a hospital of Hubei University of Medicine. An earlier paper from the same department (2021) followed the same approach with purpurin, another plant-derived compound, which killed A549 lung cancer cells through oxidative stress and lower PI3K/AKT signalling.
