Stefan M. Schieke

Physician-scientist who, as a postdoc at the NHLBI, helped show that mTOR-raptor activity tracks mitochondrial oxygen consumption in human cells; his lab now studies the metabolism of lymphoid cancers.

Associate Professor of Dermatology, Georgetown University Medical Center, and attending dermatologist, MedStar Health · formerly Assistant Professor of Dermatology, University of Wisconsin–Madison · dermatology residency, Boston University · postdoctoral fellowship, NHLBI, NIH · MD, Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf

Stefan Schieke was first author of the 2006 Journal of Biological Chemistry study from Toren Finkel's group at the NHLBI (SCH2006). In cultured human cells, the amount of mTOR-raptor complex correlated with mitochondrial activity, and rapamycin lowered oxygen consumption, membrane potential and ATP-making capacity. mTOR and mTOR-raptor were found in mitochondrial fractions. The link to lifespan was a hypothesis, not tested in this paper.

Schieke trained in medicine in Düsseldorf, spent five years as a postdoctoral fellow at the NHLBI and then completed a dermatology residency at Boston University. After a faculty post at the University of Wisconsin–Madison he moved to Georgetown and MedStar Health in Washington, where he treats patients, including those with cutaneous lymphoma, and studies the metabolic needs of lymphoma and leukaemia cells.
