Sofia Helena Vitte

Brazilian medical researcher who works on evidence synthesis and cardiometabolic studies, and first author of the 2026 meta-analysis of everolimus in heart transplant recipients

Hospital de Amor Nossa Senhora, Barretos (VITTE2026, 2026) · Department of Medicine, Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Campinas (2025–2026) · Atherosclerosis and Vascular Biology Laboratory (Aterolab), State University of Campinas (2022–2024)

Sofia Helena Vitte was first author of a 2026 meta-analysis in JHLT Open (VITTE2026) on everolimus after heart transplantation. Everolimus is a rapamycin-like drug that blocks mTOR and is used to stop the immune system from attacking a new organ. A meta-analysis pools the numbers from many studies to get a clearer answer than any one study gives. This one pooled 60 studies with 1,786 heart transplant recipients.

Everolimus-based treatment slowed cardiac allograft vasculopathy, the narrowing of the transplanted heart's arteries that limits how long the new heart lasts, to about 57 percent of the risk seen without it. When doctors also reduced calcineurin inhibitors, older drugs that damage the kidneys, kidney function was clearly better. Deaths from any cause did not change, but side effects and stopping treatment were more common. This is evidence from transplant patients, pooled across studies of different designs.

PubMed shows Vitte's earlier work at the Atherosclerosis and Vascular Biology Laboratory of the State University of Campinas, on the Brazilian Diabetes Study of people with type 2 diabetes (2022 to 2024), and later at the Department of Medicine of the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Campinas, including other meta-analyses on exercise after Fontan heart surgery (2025) and on preventing lung collapse after CT-guided lung biopsy (2026). The 2026 everolimus paper lists the Hospital de Amor Nossa Senhora in Barretos.
