Smita Majumder

First author of a mouse study in Salvatore Oddo's group showing that rapamycin started early in life, but not in middle age, protected against age-related memory decline

Department of Physiology, UT Health Science Center at San Antonio (papers with Salvatore Oddo, 2009–2012)

Smita Majumder was first author of the Atlas study in which mice fed rapamycin from two months of age learned and remembered a water-maze task better at 18 months than untreated mice, while mice started on rapamycin at 15 months, when memory deficits were already present, did no better (MAJ2012). The early-treated mice had lower IL-1beta in the brain and higher phosphorylation of the NMDA receptor subunit NR2B and of CREB.

Majumder published a series of papers with Salvatore Oddo's group at UT Health Science Center at San Antonio between 2009 and 2012 on mTOR, autophagy and memory in ageing and Alzheimer's disease model mice. No later institutional page was found, so the affiliation shown is the one on the Atlas paper.

2012 A Lifelong rapamycin administration ameliorates age-dependent cognitive deficits by reducing IL-1β and enhancing NMDA signaling MAJ2012 First author: showed in mice that lifelong rapamycin from young adulthood, but not from middle age, protected spatial learning and memory at 18 months.

  • Arlan Richardson Studies how rapamycin slows ageing in mice, including the broad changes it causes in the liver, and co-authored early studies showing that rapamycin protects memory in Alzheimer's-model mice
  • Randy Strong Leads the San Antonio site of the NIA Interventions Testing Program, which tests each compound in parallel at three sites under one shared protocol. He first-authored the program's reports on resveratrol and other supplements (2012) and on rapamycin combined with acarbose (2022)
  • Salvatore Oddo Alzheimer's disease researcher who showed that amyloid-beta raises mTOR activity and that lowering mTOR with rapamycin cuts amyloid and Tau pathology in mice through autophagy
