Protul A. Shrikant
Tumour immunologist whose Roswell Park group showed in mouse CD8 T cells that mTOR activity, driven by IL-12, decides between effector and memory fates through T-bet and Eomesodermin
Professor of Immunobiology, University of Arizona College of Medicine, Tucson · earlier faculty, Department of Immunology, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo (affiliation on RAO2010) · postdoc with Matthew Mescher, Center for Immunology, University of Minnesota (1996–2000) · PhD, University of Alabama at Birmingham (1995)
Protul Shrikant was the senior author of the Atlas study showing that IL-12 sustains mTOR activity in antigen-stimulated mouse CD8 T cells, that this keeps T-bet switched on for effector function, and that blocking mTOR with rapamycin raises Eomesodermin and produces memory-precursor cells with better persistence and tumour control after transfer (RAO2010). Follow-up work from his group linked mTOR to homeostatic proliferation of CD8 T cells and to the transcription factor Foxo1.
Shrikant earned his PhD at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and did postdoctoral work on CD8 T-cell responses to tumours with Matthew Mescher at the University of Minnesota. He then led a group in the Department of Immunology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, and is now Professor of Immunobiology at the University of Arizona, where his research focuses on anti-tumour immunity.
