Michael J. Lenardo

Immunologist known for work on how immune cells die and are controlled; his lab also showed that mTOR reactivation ends autophagy and rebuilds lysosomes.

Michael Lenardo is an immunologist at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in the US National Institutes of Health. His NIAID profile says he set up an independent research unit there in 1989 and became a Senior Investigator and Section Chief in 1994. He trained at Johns Hopkins (BA), Washington University in St. Louis (MD) and, as a postdoctoral fellow, at the Whitehead Institute at MIT.

The 2010 Nature paper in the Atlas, with Li Yu as first author, looked at what happens to autophagy (the cell's recycling process) during long starvation. mTOR is switched off at first, which starts autophagy. After prolonged starvation, mTOR switches back on.

The reactivated mTOR stops autophagy and helps rebuild lysosomes, the cell's digestive compartments, from tubes that bud off the autolysosomes. This showed autophagy as a cycle that ends by restoring the lysosomes it used.
