José Martina was first author of the 2013 Journal of Cell Biology study with Rosa Puertollano (MAR2013). In human cells, TFEB reached the lysosome by binding active Rag GTPase heterodimers through its first 30 amino acids, and this recruitment was needed for mTORC1 to phosphorylate TFEB at S211. Depleting the Rags or the Ragulator subunit p18 abolished lysosomal TFEB, and some MITF isoforms behaved the same way.

Martina has worked with Puertollano at the NHLBI for many years on TFEB and TFE3, including a 2025 EMBO Reports study on two TFE3 isoforms that share the same Rag/mTORC1 control.
