Harold Jefferies

Biochemist who worked on S6 kinase and 5'TOP mRNA translation in George Thomas's lab and has studied the molecular machinery of autophagy in Sharon Tooze's lab since 2003.

Principal Laboratory Research Scientist, Tooze lab, The Francis Crick Institute (since 2003) · Peter Parker's lab, ICRF/Cancer Research UK (2000–2003) · Julian Downward's lab, ICRF (from 1997) · PhD with George Thomas (1994) and postdoc in Basel · BSc in biochemistry, Newcastle University

Harold Jefferies was first author of the 1997 EMBO Journal study from George Thomas's lab at the Friedrich Miescher Institute (JEF1997). Using reporter mRNAs and S6 kinase mutants in mammalian cells, the team concluded that rapamycin blocks the translation of 5'TOP mRNAs, which encode ribosomal proteins, by blocking p70 S6 kinase. Later knockout work found 5'TOP control that does not need S6K1, so this step is no longer the accepted model.

Jefferies did his PhD in George Thomas's lab on S6 phosphorylation, S6 kinase and translation, followed by postdoctoral work in Basel. He then moved to London, working on Ras, PI3K and Raf signalling in Julian Downward's lab and on PI3K and PKD drug-discovery projects in Peter Parker's lab, before joining Sharon Tooze's autophagy lab in 2003, now at the Francis Crick Institute.
