Evandro de Azambuja
Brazilian-born medical oncologist at the Institut Jules Bordet in Brussels who designs and runs large academic breast cancer trials
Head of the Medical Support Team, Academic Trials Promoting Team, Institut Jules Bordet, Brussels · PhD, Université libre de Bruxelles (2015) · PhD, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brazil (2007)
Evandro de Azambuja is senior author of EVERGREEN (MAR2026), a study of women with ER-positive, HER2-negative advanced breast cancer whose disease had grown despite hormone therapy plus a CDK4/6 inhibitor. Adding everolimus, a drug that blocks mTOR, to the next hormone therapy gave a modest delay in cancer growth (median 5.0 versus 4.3 months) without a clear gain in survival. The study used records from several centres and was not randomised, so the result guides careful selection of patients rather than settling the question.
Everolimus reached breast cancer care through the BOLERO-2 trial in 2012, before CDK4/6 inhibitors became standard. EVERGREEN checks whether that old evidence still holds in today's treatment order, which is the kind of practical question academic trial groups exist to answer.
De Azambuja holds a PhD from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre, Brazil (2007), and a second PhD from the Université libre de Bruxelles (2015). At the Institut Jules Bordet de Azambuja heads the medical support team of the Academic Trials Promoting Team, a unit that runs international breast cancer trials. The main research interest is the design and conduct of large clinical trials in breast cancer, including studies of HER2-targeted drugs. De Azambuja also serves on the advisory board of the Anticancer Fund.
