Diogo Martins-Branco
Portuguese medical oncologist focused on breast cancer who moved from clinical research at the Institut Jules Bordet to the scientific division of the European Society for Medical Oncology
Scientific and Medical Division, European Society for Medical Oncology, Lugano (2026 paper) · Academic Trials Promoting Team, Institut Jules Bordet, Université libre de Bruxelles (papers 2022–2026) · Breast Multidisciplinary Clinic, Instituto Português de Oncologia de Lisboa Francisco Gentil (earlier papers)
Diogo Martins-Branco is first author of EVERGREEN (MAR2026), a study of women with ER-positive, HER2-negative advanced breast cancer whose disease had grown despite hormone therapy combined with a CDK4/6 inhibitor, today's standard first treatment. The question was whether adding everolimus, an mTOR blocker, to the next hormone therapy still helps. Across several centres, patients given everolimus went a little longer before the cancer grew again (median 5.0 versus 4.3 months) but did not clearly live longer.
Everolimus was approved for this kind of breast cancer before CDK4/6 inhibitors existed, so doctors need to know whether it still works after them. EVERGREEN gives a cautious answer: a small benefit, best kept for selected patients. The study looked back at patient records and was not randomised, so differences in who received the drug may have shaped the result.
Martins-Branco trained and worked as a medical oncologist in Lisbon, publishing from the breast clinic of the Instituto Português de Oncologia de Lisboa on topics such as using genomic tests to spare women chemotherapy. From about 2022 the papers list the Academic Trials Promoting Team at the Institut Jules Bordet in Brussels, which designs and runs large academic breast cancer trials, and work there included reviews on antibody-drug conjugates. A 2026 paper on the ESMO scale for ranking cancer gene targets lists the Scientific and Medical Division of the European Society for Medical Oncology in Lugano, Switzerland, which appears to be the current post.
