Douglas Green is an immunologist at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis. He is best known for studying apoptosis, the controlled way in which cells die, in cancer and in the immune system. His honours include election to the US National Academy of Sciences in 2020.

The study in the Atlas, led by Ruoning Wang in his laboratory, asked how T cells prepare for a fight. When a T cell is activated it must grow and divide fast, so it changes how it uses sugar and the amino acid glutamine. The team found that the transcription factor Myc, not HIF1 alpha, controls this switch, and that glutamine feeds the making of polyamines, small molecules cells need to grow.

The paper connects immune cell activation to nutrient use, the same theme in which mTOR acts as a master controller of growth. It is included in the Atlas because the metabolic reprogramming it describes is part of the picture of how mTOR-linked growth signals shape T cell responses.
