Craig Currie

Pharmacoepidemiologist at Cardiff University who uses large UK primary care databases to study diabetes treatments and their long-term outcomes, and senior author of the 2014 metformin survival study

Division of Population Medicine, School of Medicine, Cardiff University · Human Data Sciences, Cardiff (PubMed affiliations, 2023) · Cochrane Institute of Primary Care and Public Health, Cardiff University (2013–2014)

In the Atlas study BAN2014, Currie's group, with first author Christian Bannister, used UK primary care records to compare people with type 2 diabetes who started on metformin or on a sulphonylurea with matched people without diabetes. People started on metformin had slightly longer median survival than the matched non-diabetic group, while those on sulphonylureas had shorter survival. Metformin acts on the cell's energy sensing, which feeds into mTOR, and is being studied as a possible anti-ageing drug.

The result is observational. Differences between the patients that the records do not capture, and the tendency of people who take their medicine to be healthier in other ways, could explain part of it. It is consistent with a benefit but does not prove one.

On PubMed, Currie is the senior author on a long line of studies from Cardiff University using the Clinical Practice Research Datalink, a large database of anonymised GP records, on diabetes drugs, cardiovascular risk and survival. A 2023 paper lists him at both the Division of Population Medicine in Cardiff University's School of Medicine and Human Data Sciences in Cardiff, on a platform that produces disease statistics from routine health records almost in real time.
