Cong Xu
Hematologist in Shenzhen who studies drug resistance and drug safety in multiple myeloma, and senior author of a study linking a small RNA fragment to autophagy-driven resistance to bortezomib
Department of Hematology, The Seventh Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, Shenzhen (papers 2025–2026)
Multiple myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells, the antibody factories of the bone marrow. A standard drug against it is bortezomib, which blocks the proteasome, the machine that destroys unwanted proteins, so that myeloma cells choke on their own protein waste. Many patients eventually stop responding. In FU2026, Cong Xu's group found that a small RNA piece cut from a transfer RNA, called tRF-17-8SPOL52, is raised in relapsed or treatment-resistant myeloma. It lowers RUBCN, a protein that normally holds back autophagy, the cell's self-digestion system. With the brake removed, autophagy speeds up and helps myeloma cells survive bortezomib. The link to mTOR is indirect: autophagy is one of the main processes mTORC1 keeps in check.
Xu works in the Department of Hematology of the Seventh Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University in Shenzhen. In 2025 Xu was senior author of a study that used the US FDA adverse event reporting database to map lung side effects, such as pneumonia and interstitial lung disease, linked to the antibody drugs approved for myeloma. No personal institutional page was found, so the affiliation shown is the one on the Atlas paper.
