Chang-Myung Oh
Metabolism researcher at GIST in South Korea whose lab studies heart and metabolic disease in mice, including how urolithin A protects the stiff heart in HFpEF
Department of Biomedical Science and Engineering, Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (at the time of the 2026 study)
Chang-Myung Oh is the senior author of SONH2026, with Hangyul Song as first author. The study looks at heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), in which the heart pumps a normal share of blood per beat but its muscle is stiff and fills poorly. Urolithin A, a compound that gut bacteria make from foods such as pomegranates, improved heart function and structure in HFpEF mice. It activated AMPK, the cell's energy sensor, turned down mTOR, and so restored mitophagy, the removal of damaged mitochondria. It also lowered blood ceramides, fatty molecules linked to heart damage, through changes in the gut microbiome. These findings come from mice and cell models.
PubMed lists more than seventy papers under this name with a GIST affiliation. No official profile page could be opened, so the title and training are not given here, and the position shown is the affiliation on the Atlas paper.
