Andrea Maier is a professor of medicine at the National University of Singapore, where she works in the Healthy Longevity Translational Research Programme. The paper's byline also lists a link to the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Her work focuses on how people age and on ways to measure and improve healthy longevity.
The systematic review in the Atlas, led by Deborah Lee, asked what is actually known about rapamycin and its relatives (rapalogs) as anti-ageing treatments in people. The team searched five databases, screened 18,400 articles and included 19 studies.
Rapamycin and rapalogs improved some measures in the immune, cardiovascular and skin systems. No significant effects were found for the endocrine, muscle or nervous systems. No serious side effects were reported in healthy people, but people with age-related disease had more infections and higher cholesterol and triglycerides. The authors called for studies of the systems not yet tested and for long-term exposure.
