Amany A E Ahmed
Pharmacologist at Helwan University in Cairo who leads animal studies of how existing drugs and natural compounds protect tissues from inflammation, fibrosis and injury
Pharmacology and Toxicology Department, Faculty of Pharmacy, Helwan University, Cairo, Egypt (affiliation on PubMed papers from 2020 to 2026)
Amany Ahmed is the senior (last) author of HAFEZ2026, a mouse study of psoriasis, the skin disease with thick, red, scaly patches. The team caused psoriasis-like skin disease in mice with imiquimod cream and then gave melittin, the main peptide in bee venom. Melittin reduced the severity of the skin disease by about 60 percent. In the treated skin the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway was turned down and autophagy, the cell's recycling system, was turned up. This is a mouse study at a high injected dose, so it shows a mechanism worth testing, not a treatment for people.
PubMed lists Ahmed at the Pharmacology and Toxicology Department of Helwan University's Faculty of Pharmacy on about 25 papers since 2020, usually as senior author. The studies follow a common plan: a disease is induced in rats or mice and a drug or plant compound is tested for protection. Examples include the diabetes drug lixisenatide in a rat model of stroke (2020), the weight-loss drug semaglutide in a rat model of osteoporosis after loss of the ovaries (2024), and the plant compound phloridzin against lung scarring caused by the cancer drug bleomycin (2026), where autophagy was again one of the processes measured.

| 2026 | A | Melittin attenuates imiquimod-induced psoriatic dermatitis in mice: a role for autophagy activation via PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway suppression. HAFEZ2026 Senior author: showed in mice that melittin from bee venom eases psoriasis-like skin disease while lowering PI3K/Akt/mTOR signalling and raising autophagy. |
