Ahmed H. Madkour

Pharmacologist at Mansoura University who tests approved drugs as protection against seizures and kidney injury in rats

Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Faculty of Pharmacy, Mansoura University (papers 2022–2026) · Faculty of Health Science Technology, Mansoura National University (2026)

Ahmed Madkour was first author of the Atlas study MADKOUR2026 in Scientific Reports, which asked whether carvedilol, a beta-blocker used for heart failure and high blood pressure, could slow the development of epilepsy. Rats received repeated doses of PTZ, a chemical that makes seizures easier to trigger, until seizures became stronger over time (kindling). Rats given carvedilol beforehand had lower seizure scores, less damage in the hippocampus and less inflammation linked to the NLRP3 inflammasome, an alarm system of immune cells. Proteins of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway, which controls cell growth and survival, changed at the same time. The authors say the study shows associations only, so it does not prove that mTOR signalling is the reason carvedilol helped.

PubMed lists Madkour at the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Mansoura University, Egypt, from 2022 onward. An earlier first-author paper (2022) found that lactoferrin, an iron-binding milk protein, protected rat kidneys in a dose-dependent way after muscle breakdown caused by glycerol. A 2026 first-author paper in Neurotoxicology, again with Mahmoud Elshal, reported that the diabetes drug empagliflozin reduced PTZ-induced seizures in rats and worked best together with a lower dose of levetiracetam. That paper also lists the Faculty of Health Science Technology at Mansoura National University. No official profile page was found.

2026 A Carvedilol attenuates PTZ-induced epileptogenesis: associations with hippocampal neuroinflammation and PI3K/AKT/mTOR-related alterations. MADKOUR2026 First author: ran the rat PTZ-kindling study in which carvedilol lowered seizure scores, hippocampal damage and NLRP3 inflammation, with matching changes in PI3K/AKT/mTOR-related proteins.
