Agnieszka Dąbkowska
Leukemia researcher in Warsaw who works on new drug combinations for B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, including mTORC1 inhibitors that make leukemia cells easier targets for anti-CD20 antibodies
Laboratory of Immunology, Mossakowski Medical Research Institute, Polish Academy of Sciences · Department of Immunology, Medical University of Warsaw (papers with Malgorzata Firczuk, 2024–2026)
B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (BCP-ALL) is the most common childhood cancer. Antibody drugs such as rituximab attack cells that carry the surface protein CD20, but many BCP-ALL cells show little CD20, so the antibodies have few places to grab. In DAB2026, Agnieszka Dąbkowska and colleagues in Malgorzata Firczuk's group found that drugs blocking mTORC1, the growth-control complex, raise CD20 on these leukemia cells. The route runs through AKT and the transcription factor FOXO1, and the treated cells also move a step further along B-cell maturation. As a result, anti-CD20 antibodies killed leukemia cells better, including in high-risk disease with deletions in the IKZF1 gene. The study gives a laboratory rationale for combining mTORC1 inhibitors with CD20-targeted antibodies; it is not a clinical trial.
Dąbkowska works with the Firczuk group at the Mossakowski Medical Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Department of Immunology of the Medical University of Warsaw. In 2024 Dąbkowska was a co-author of a study showing that blocking the antioxidant enzyme peroxiredoxin-1 together with a DNA repair pathway makes Philadelphia-positive B-ALL much more sensitive to tyrosine kinase inhibitors. No personal institutional page was found, so the affiliation shown is the one on the Atlas paper.
