Wei-Ying Chen
Urologist at Taizhou Hospital in Zhejiang and senior author of a review on why FLCN loss affects mTORC1 selectively in Birt-Hogg-Dube syndrome
Department of Urology, Taizhou Hospital of Zhejiang Province, affiliated to Wenzhou Medical University, and Enze Hospital, Taizhou Enze Medical Center (papers 2023–2026)
In Birt-Hogg-Dube syndrome, faults in the FLCN gene cause skin bumps, lung cysts and kidney tumours. Wei-Ying Chen was the last author, usually the senior author, of the 2026 review CAO2026 in Frontiers in Oncology. The review argues against the old idea that FLCN loss simply turns on mTORC1, the cell's growth-control complex, everywhere. FLCN works on the RagC/D switch proteins, which steer only some mTORC1 targets, especially the MiT/TFE transcription factors. Losing both FLCN copies lets these factors build up in the nucleus and drives kidney tumours, while one lost copy may be enough for lung and skin problems. It is a review of existing work, not a new experiment.
PubMed lists Chen in the Department of Urology of Taizhou Hospital of Zhejiang Province, affiliated to Wenzhou Medical University, on papers from 2023 to 2026. Together with Zhi-Lie Cao and Xiao-Ping Qi, Chen has co-authored case reports and reviews on rare hereditary tumours, such as multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A, a pheochromocytoma-paraganglioma syndrome now called multiple endocrine neoplasia type 5 (2024), and a primary seminoma of the prostate (2023).
