Tianxiong Xiao

Researcher at the Hangzhou Institute for Advanced Study and first author of a 2026 review on how nutrient-sensing pathways steer adult stem cells through life

School of Life Science, Hangzhou Institute for Advanced Study, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (at the time of the study)

Tianxiong Xiao is first author of XIA2026, a review in Seminars in Cell and Developmental Biology. It does not report new experiments. It pulls together evidence that four nutrient-sensing systems, mTOR, AMPK, the sirtuins and insulin/IGF-1 signaling, work as one network to decide what adult stem cells do: stay at rest (quiescence), wake up and divide, or turn into specialised cells. Adult stem cells keep tissues such as blood, muscle, gut and brain supplied with new cells, so this decision matters throughout life.

The review argues that with age the network drifts out of balance, for example with mTOR too active, which can wear stem cells out and add to tissue decline. Because it is a review, its framework is a proposal built on mostly animal and cell studies, and the Atlas treats it as a map of ideas rather than as evidence in its own right.

PubMed lists Xiao at the Key Laboratory of Systems Health Science of Zhejiang Province, School of Life Science, Hangzhou Institute for Advanced Study of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, with Hu C as senior author. No other papers could be tied to this person with confidence, and no profile page was found, so the affiliation shown is the one at the time of the study.
