Ryan C. Russell
Studies how the nutrient-sensing kinases mTORC1, ULK1 and AMPK control the autophagy machinery; as a postdoc with Kun-Liang Guan he showed that ULK1 phosphorylates Beclin-1 to switch on the autophagy-specific VPS34 complex.
Professor, Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, University of Ottawa (faculty since 2015) · postdoc with Kun-Liang Guan, Department of Pharmacology, UC San Diego · PhD in molecular oncology, University of Toronto · BSc in biochemistry, University of British Columbia

Ryan Russell was first author of the 2013 Nature Cell Biology study from Kun-Liang Guan's lab at UC San Diego (RUS2013). After amino-acid withdrawal or mTOR inhibition, ULK1 phosphorylated Beclin-1 at serine 14 and raised the activity of ATG14L-containing VPS34 lipid-kinase complexes. Cells with a non-phosphorylatable Beclin-1 did not increase autophagosomes on starvation, and the matching mutation impaired autophagy in C. elegans embryos.
Russell studied biochemistry at the University of British Columbia and took his PhD in molecular oncology at the University of Toronto, working on oxygen sensing and clear cell renal carcinoma. After his postdoc with Guan he joined the University of Ottawa in 2015, where his lab works on autophagy regulation by nutrient-sensing kinases, signal transduction and metabolism.

- Joungmok Kim Showed as a Guan-lab postdoc that AMPK and mTORC1 control autophagy by phosphorylating ULK1 at different sites, with mTORC1's mark on Ser757 blocking activation by AMPK
- Kun-Liang Guan Showed how growth-factor and energy signals reach mTORC1 through TSC2 and Rheb, and, in parallel with the Sabatini lab, that the Rag GTPases carry the amino-acid signal. His lab also found that AMPK and mTORC1 control autophagy by phosphorylating the kinase ULK1 at different sites
