Kerry Crone was senior author of the 2006 Annals of Neurology report led by David Franz (FRA2006). Five people with tuberous sclerosis complex whose brain astrocytomas were growing were treated with oral rapamycin at standard immunosuppressive blood levels. Every lesion shrank on MRI, and in one patient the tumour regrew when treatment stopped and shrank again when it restarted. This was an uncontrolled series of five patients, one of the early clinical reports that came before the EXIST-1 everolimus trial and the authors suggested that the drug might offer an alternative to surgery for these tumours.

Crone studied medicine at the University of Cincinnati, trained in neurosurgery at North Carolina Baptist Hospital and in pediatric neurosurgery at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, and was a clinical scholar in neurosurgery at Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati, in 1986. He is listed in the University of Cincinnati Department of Neurosurgery.
