Jingyue Zhang
Pharmacy researcher at Lanzhou University working with Wen Li on the chemistry and actions of traditional Chinese medicines, from extracting plant compounds to testing a herbal formula in breast cancer models
School of Pharmacy, Lanzhou University (papers with Wen Li, 2024–2026; at the time of the study)
Jingyue Zhang was first author of a 2026 Atlas study on the Xingxiao Pill, a traditional Chinese herbal formula, in breast cancer models (ZHANG2026C). The pill slowed the growth of 4T1 mouse breast cancer cells in culture and of 4T1 tumours in mice. It lowered signalling along the ErbB3/PI3K/AKT/mTOR chain, a relay that carries growth signals from the cell surface down to mTOR, the cell's growth-control kinase, and it changed how the tumours used amino acids. Computer docking pointed to two of the pill's ingredients, cinnamic acid and palmitic acid, as compounds that can bind mTOR. All of this was done in mouse cells and mice, so it does not show an effect in patients.
Zhang's other papers from the School of Pharmacy at Lanzhou University, also with Wen Li as senior author, are on the chemistry side of plant medicines. A 2024 study in Food Chemistry, for example, built magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers, a kind of chemical trap shaped to fit one molecule, to pull the compound glabridin out of licorice waste left over from industrial processing.

Milestones in the Atlas
A selection, not a full bibliography: only papers that meet the Atlas inclusion criteria.
| Year | Evidence | Study |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | A | Anti-breast cancer effects of the Xingxiao Pill are associated with inhibition of the ErbB3/PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway, modulation of amino acid metabolism, and promotion of apoptosis. ZHANG2026C First author: showed in 4T1 cells and mice that the Xingxiao Pill slows breast tumour growth with lower ErbB3/PI3K/AKT/mTOR signalling and changed amino acid metabolism. |
