Denisa Pirscoveanu
Neurology researcher in Craiova who works with Aurel Popa-Wagner on aging and stroke, and first author of a 2026 review on why mTOR-type lifespan gains shrink from worms to mammals
Department of Neurology, University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova (2026) · Chair of Vascular Neurology, Dementia and Ageing, University Hospital Essen (2025 affiliation)
Blocking TOR, the yeast and worm version of mTOR, can lengthen the life of a roundworm several-fold, yet rapamycin extends mouse lifespan by a much smaller fraction. The 2026 review led by Denisa Pirscoveanu, with Aurel Popa-Wagner as senior author, asks why. It compares data from the worm C. elegans, the fruit fly and rodents and argues that in simple animals aging is steered by a few high-leverage pathways, while in mammals it is spread across many tissues with backup systems, feedback, hormones, gut microbes and the complications of getting a drug to the right place in the body.
The authors call this a shift from pathway leverage to system-level buffering. It is a synthesis of earlier results, not a new experiment, and it gives a framework for why a pathway like mTOR can matter a great deal in mammals while any single drug still has a limited effect on lifespan.
PubMed places Pirscoveanu in the Department of Neurology at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova in 2026 and, in 2025, at the Chair of Vascular Neurology, Dementia and Ageing of University Hospital Essen, University of Duisburg-Essen, where Popa-Wagner also works. Their joint papers since 2025 include work on immune genes and post-stroke damage in the aging rat brain.
